Because many of the problems that appear in designing a product are in the range that can be found with a simulator, possibly more conveniently than using the "real connection". Just because simulation doesn't address /all/ problems, it doesn't mean that it's not a good tool. You read data sheets, don't you? A data sheet is not really any different than a simulation of a device. A simulation is the data sheet in a computer-readable form.
