Probably easiest with a permanent magnet and a hall-effect sensor. Could 
also use a Slotted Optical Switch (something like: 
http://www.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail?Ref=47460&Row=157526&Site=CA) 
or one of the others...
