Strongly agree. At least a transitor based simple driver should be used.

PIC16Cs are relatively strong MCU in terms of EMC. PIC16Fs are not
as good but still not too bad. You can try the Silicon Labs C8051Fs to
see how bad they are... The old Atmel AVR MCUs are also notoriously bad.
