Hi Olin
Your suspicion was correct it looks like a device support issue. 
I have another design that has a 16F676 the programmer recognizes it just
fine. 
(I don't see how you can test for every possible device in the first place.)


Do you need me to send you a 18F6620? 
I'd be happy to send you one so you don't have to order one piece but all I
have are in the 64 pin quad flat pack.
If so do you have a socket that will support it?
If you don't I could send a cable with my header on it and a target board
with a device mounted.

Yes, I'm assuming the target is OK.  I wanted to see if the ProProg is
working at all.  If it works fine on a totally different target, then maybe
there is a bug in the definition for the 18F6620 for example.  Knowing
whether it is otherwise working would help narrow down the cause.

You should also make sure there is no connection between the ProProg Vdd and
the target Vdd when you are powering the target separately.
