I first saw this years ago in COLA (comp.os.linux.advocacy a USENET 
group for fanaticists ;-)
I heard somewhere that it started as a satire and that some kooky soccer 
mom ran accross it and took it as gospel.  I don't know how much truth 
there is to that, but it sounds plausable.
