To make things easier, try and look for a "world" phone (also called
triband or quad band). Many of the phones sold in NA used to have
GSM900/GSM1800 coverage, in addition to the NA GSM1900 coverage.
Examples include the Sony Ericsson T300 and T310.

Again, I don't know what country you are in, but I bought a prepaid
T-Mobile SIM in Austria and the phone has worked in Austria, Holland,
Finland the US and Canada.
