Maybe someone can recommend a book or source of simple experiments that demonstrate fundamental concepts (voltage dividers, zener diodes, transistors, etc). That way, Olin can direct you in the context of the circuit as a system and you can take the fundamental concept of the component and see the hows and whys of using it. I suspect that if it took lots of digging to find the key points of a zener amongst the not-so-key points, you are going to find transistors very frustrating.
