It's usually better to use a larger PIC than to externally multiplex pin functions. I've used 64 and 80 pin PICs in various projects as appropriate. However what I was saying is that the overwhelming majority of my quick one-off PIC projects can be handled with a 28 pin PIC without any external multiplexing.
