I personally have gone with the 30F series. They are a pleasure to work with since you rarely have to worry about resources. The run at 3.3V without getting a "special" part and they can be fast. When I need something very specific I might go down to the 18F line (i.e. USB or a mid range pin count). For low pin count I go to the 12F series (technically a 16F line).
