I'm more of an applications guy who is moving to the systems programming area. Though I'd like someday to write a compiler, like you've done. But if I wanted to, I'm confident I could learn the things you mention below in not too long a time. Like a previous person said: experience. What is H&H? Do you know programming theory, things like properties of sorting algorithms, calculatability, B+ trees, hashing, recursive decent and bottom-up parsers, properties of numerical algorithms, linear programming, AB-algorithm, etc? If you do: there just is as much to learn about electronics.
