I do find it useful however to have them onboard. The ATN line that would normally available on a Stamp module is wired to the MAX232 but isn't connected. That keeps it from resetting the SX48 chip. This allows the module to sit in place of a 40 pin Stamp and can log data back to a terminal session like HyperTerminal with no wiring changes. In SX/B it's a breeze to use. If the extra parts are left off you could jumper over to the pads of the MAX232 to bring the signal directly to the breadboard pin for a couple more I/O's. For power it has an onboard voltage regulator. I've used two different LDO versions. One was rated at 800ma and the other at a full amp. It's nice if you need to power a few other things and don't want to use another regulator.
