OK, I'll agree that Clippy (actually "Clippit") was poorly delivered, but I think it worth mention that I'm currently experimenting with a much more productive use for Agent software. I'm in a fairly well automated manufacturing plant, and by necessity, many of our controls must offer some means of running with reduced quality checks in certain situations. Ideally they should only be used rarely, but I need some means to make sure that the machines are not left in these "bypass" modes indefinetly. So as it's currently shaping up, if you run a machine in reduced mode for, say 30 minutes, an "Agent" (Clippit, Merlin, Genie, Parrot etc..) will pop up on the desktop of the immediate supervisor to alert him. If it's not corrected within a preset time, the agent appears again, this time one rung higher up the management ladder. The longer it takes to fix the real problem, the more people know about it. Now I see this as a good thing. Using the Agent software for what it does best: Annoying people. If the problem goes uncorrected for some period of time, the general manager will be asking questions.
