While everyone else is questioning the electrical setup, I thought
I'd throw out that an 8byte transmission will overrun the "FIFO"
of the typical microcontroller UART, but not the deeper FIFO of the
usual PC serial port.  The prior interactions were short enough
that handling received data bytes too slowly wouldn't matter.
