You must be thinking of something else.  The timing for each RS-232
character is relative to the leading edge of the start bit.  Since each
character has a start bit, the sender and receiver re-sync each character.
For a 8 bit character, errors only accumulate for 9 1/2 bit times (leading
edge of start bit to middle of stop bit).
