A few years ago I was trying out a new 2m handheld transceiver, and tuned to a frequency that I know someone half a mile away used a lot.  He was 
there, but much weaker than I expected - until I realised I hadn't fitted the aerial - I was receiving him just on the BNC socket!  :-)
