AN1003 is at http://www.microchip.com/stellent/idcplg?IdcService=SS_GET_PAGE&nodeId=1824&appnote=en024394 . I believe it is relying on the OS talking to the USB to handle the FAT file system. The PIC probably only knows how to do sector reads and writes. I wrote some FAT16 stuff myself by studying all the available documentation and using Hex Workshop to see what's on the various sectors of various sized MMC/SD cards.
