The nearest PIC looks like an 18F4550 (32kb flash, 2k ram) at $11.53 qty 1 from Digikey. The 16F PICs have max memory of 8k (words), and max ram of less than 400 bytes, so they're not even in the running (assuming you NEED that memory.) Most of the 40pin PICs are comparable in price to the 40pin AVRs (the smaller AVR being the ATmega8515), except for the PIC16F59 (2k flash, 135b ram) at $2 each ($1 each in 25s! Wow. I hadn't realized that Microchip had made their "baseline flash" chips THAT cheap! That's... nearly disruptive!)
