Huh. Where are you located and where are you purchasing from? My observation was that prices were pretty comparable, except for a few targeted chips where it looked like Atmel was specifically trying to undercut Microchip prices (ATTINY11, ATMEGA48) Beware pricing of semi-obsolete chips; attiny2313 is significantly cheaper than at90s2313, for instance.
