someone already mentioned freeing up an IO pin.

another scenario i can think of is if you have legacy routines written for a 40mhz core speed and you wan't to add USB support to your device (the only way to get both a core speed of 40mhz and correct USB speeds is to use a 40mhz external clock).

wanting to be able to use the divide by 4 clock output would be another.
