Glad you got it working! I like using resonators because they're cheap, durable, and don't take much space. I've had good luck with 10MHz and ok luck with 20MHz. The 10MHz with the clock multiplier in the 18F series is nice. Regarding "powered oscillators", there are crystal oscillator modules, typically in little metal cans. There are also clock oscillator chips from Linear Technology that are an RC oscillator with everything on the chip. But Microchip also puts RC oscillators on a lot of chips (no external R or C) and is getting pretty good accuracy and stability.
