Found it in MPLAB7.50 help. Search for "Project Manager Toolbar".

"Build Configuration drop-down list - Used for the MPLAB ICD 2 in-circuit debugger 
and MPLAB REAL ICE in-circuit emulator. For 16-bit devices, select "Debug" when 
the tool is selected as a debugger and "Release" when the tool is selected as a 
programmer.  For 8-bit devices, special linker scripts are used when the tool is 
selected as a debugger. Consult your tool documentation for more information.

Haven't looked any further so don't know if it's useful for anything or not.
