I don't think it can be much more compact than the TTL-232R cable from FTDI. You have to look closely to notice that the USB-connector is a bit longer than a usual connector, in the other end there are 6 pins ready to connect. There you also have +5V and ground. I used this cable recently with Parallax's RFID-module. The cable and the module was all I needed, the only thing to solder was to connect /Enable to ground. Real simple, and with the help of XP's serial keyboard function I now can log in with a RFID-tag.
