The FTDI and SiLabs chips are available in tiny QFN packages. I don't
think there are any PICs with USB that small (or cheap).
For prototyping Pololu has a tiny PCB with the SiLabs chip.
There is also a USB cable with the FTDI chip in the USB 'A' connector!
