I've been using for a while almost exclusively a notebook, lots on the
road, and my touchpad didn't get stinky. It also worked (and continue to
work) quite well. For some time I also had a touchpad on a second desktop,
just to change the strain on the mouse hand a bit.

YMMV, but I can assure you, they are not useless.
