I have however been quite amazed by HOW GOOD the human brain is at filtering out noise and singling out a single sound/voice. You can be in an extremely noisey environment and still "pick out" what you want to hear. I've tried it myself listening to music, trying to "listen" to only one instrument and ignoring the rest. Concentrating enough I can single out whatever instrument I want and hum to just that instrument. It doesn't even have to be anywhere near the loudest instrument either. Quite neat.
