I've seen the odd project in the past, before affordable micros that is,
which used a BBD (bucket-brigade delay) chip. The real event, eg
thunder or speech, was the trigger to start recording, the delayed sound
was what went on tape. Same principle easy-ish with a micro and circular
buffer
