The audio signal itself (on a oscilloscope level, so to speak) is not exactly what you hear (on a physiological level, so to speak). When detecting an audio signal, you are usually (in the simplest form) interested in something like an envelope curve, filtered with a response time of below 20ms. As Jinx said, search for 'light organ'. Light organs usually have 3 such envelope detector circuits that respond to different frequency bands. Maybe a PIC is not the adequate tool to do the actual detecting. It probably is better suited to process the detection signal of some simple hardware circuitry (similar to what you find in a typical light organ).
