afiact it all comes down to compatibility of the component finishes with the solder paste. you don't wan't to use tin/lead plated components with lead free solder (lead free solder that has been contaminated with lead doesn't make particularlly good joints). I think the rohs compliant finishes are generally compatible with tin-lead solder (microchip for example explicitly state that the one they use is) but it may be wise to check.
