Another suggestion: can you use the same chip on the demo board and on
your own? If not, do they have the same chip revision? There are 'known'
but unacknowledged problems with pickit2 (uses 18F2550) USB
connection/enumeration, but it generaly manifests itself as "unknown USB
device".
