I've had my unit for a couple of weeks and has been plugged/unplugged no more than 20 times. Hence my degree of frustration. I took mine apart last night and also noticed however that I have one of the older units with the Cypress chip in it. Completely different looking than the pic posted earlier. So I'm going to try and get ahold of Microchip and see if they will exchange it.
