Well there's nothing new about Li-Ion battery fires -- in laptops or a variety of other devices. It's just that the recently recalled Sony-made batteries have a manufacturing and implementation defect in a very large batch. I recall hearing about Li-Ion battery fires back around 1997 when they first started being widely used in laptops. I'm always warning my clients about specifying Li-Ion batteries in their products and the fact that they pack a LOT of energy in a small space, plus the fact it's almost impossible to extinguish a fire should one break out. Unless you happen to have a Class D fire extinguisher handy: http://www.smokesign.com/tydmefifiex.html http://www.labsafety.com/store/Public_Safety/Fire_-_Rescue/Fire_Extinguishers/3433/ I actually have one of these in my lab, hopefully I'll never have to use it. I also keep a metal 5 gal. bucket half filled with sand and a pair of heavy leather gloves to transport a burning pack out of my lab should one ignite during testing.
