When pushing such a cable through a bunch of cables, the latches very easily hook up with other cables and either break or the plug has to be carefully removed from that location. I also don't think they are particularly good in making contact when used a lot, and the typical cables available for these plugs don't work well for a development environment. Neither is very important in typical telephone use, but that's not really what they are being used for here. IIRC, they were first designed for use internal to equipment, but then became a de-facto consumer telephony standard -- not by design, more by chance.
