I know what you're talking about (I own a TI-89), and the cable in question doesn't have a 2.5 mm plug (it's smaller, something like 1.5 mm in diameter). Also, TI-89 does not understand RS232. Their serial cables are actually converters -- they have electronics inside that convert RS232 to the proprietary TI protocol.
