I managed to break a couple of plastic clasps before opening the panel. At this point, something happenned on account of which the display intensity came up to almost its original level, except for a slightly dim area in the top left corner. However, the display is quite usable now. I'm still intrigued by the LED-as-a-backlight idea, though I suspect that even if it does work, it would display a prominent banding effect.
