Nothing is limited. BUT your minimum expectation is "only" 8 hours a day. If you choose to work more, then so be it. I get paid for 40, so I work 40. But I can turn out more work in 40 than most people that work 60. It's all about efficiency ;-) On the flip, I work with a guy that LOVES his job. He jumps in to every project we have. He easily works 80+ hours a week. But then he has no aspirations beyond that. He does not want to run his own company, nor does he want to be financially wealthy. It's all about what you aspire to, and how you intend to get there. There are many ways of advancing in the workplace working a 40. You just have to be wise in picking your projects/battles. Back to the statement at hand, it really serves to demonstrate that on salary you get paid for showing up (basic, whatever). If you're consulting on a per project basis though, you stand to make more money by working longer hours because you can turn more projects in fewer days. It's really a self-defeating cycle. If I work an hour over today, I'm going to work an hour under tomorrow. But I ALWAYS get my projects done either on schedule, or ahead. It's all about time management. It's like others have said. The trick is to find something you can get paid for w/o having to be there. Develop a product and sell it. Sell someone elses product. The guys from Sparkfun are making a mint by selling other peoples stuff. They even have enough time to develop their own products now.
