My 6x magnifier works for me perfect. I found it better than a microscope as you do not have to 'touch' your face into it, just see the stuff above the instrument and have enough space to operate under it. Maybe a higher magnification would be better to check the soldering though, but for that you can get a 20x jewel magnifier at around 20 euros (or 10x for 5), maybe on eBay even less.
