Yes, and the TARDIS was always been temperamental and they usually didn't end up where/when they wanted - there have been too many arrivals 
on target recently!

It's also the first time since the very first series that the companions have had family / friends or indeed a life outside of the TARDIS - they have 
always been cut off from their past while travelling with the Doctor, although they sometimes return to their former life afterwards.
