And it is said that parallel port based PIC programmers with a external
power supply like EPIC+ is actually quite good. It is well supported under
Windows and Linux. JDM and similar serial based programmers which steal
power from serial port are no longer suitable for many new PCs.

Personally I prefer to use USB based programmer like PICkit 2 or ICD2 at
home. I would want to use Promate III if it is for work.
