That's probably something European (or at least old-fashioned :) but it's really nice (if it's a cozy kitchen). Another thing from my German background: the entry door doesn't go into the living room, there are two "thermal DMZs" between. When you go into the door, you are first in a small hallway that is not heated, where you typically leave dirty clothes etc. Then you come into another that's half heated, from where the doors go into kitchen, living room, other rooms etc. I've never lived in the US in a cold area, and in SoCal you don't really need this.
