Being from Florida, Generators come to mind, I am building an apartment in a hangar. Item #1 for me was a whole house generator transfer switch installed in original construction. This is with a SquareD Combination Utility Service Box ( incorrect name probably ) It has a hole for the Meter and 8 Breakers, two of which will be used for the generator hookup. These two are interlocked with the MAINS breaker and function as the manual transfer switch. The price of the interlock mod kit is less than $50.00 and you are set. Then the MAINS to onto the normal interior breaker panel. Even if you don't have a gen or don't plan on one, it is cheap now and up to Thousands$$$ later if you change your mind.
