You won't see the damage.   It's not too hard to troubleshoot the
PICkit 2.  Twist the case a little bit, and it will pop open.  The
schematic is in the manual, which you can download from Microchip.com.
 Jost go along the Vdd circuit with a voltmeter and see where the
voltage disappears.
