That sounds as much like a laser issue with the drive, often with older drives historically when they are wearing out they would mis-read the TOC and determine the disc as being a different format /medium than actual. I would simply try it in a different drive If it still doesn't work. There is software for retrieving data from CD/DVD, although i can't remember its name off the top of my head.
