I had to read this a couple of times, because I made had the same misundestanding that you did: I think Brooke is saying that the RAID was used *only for backup*, that is the live disk wasn't part of the RAID, so when it failed all was lost. All that remained was a (presumably out of date) backup copy on the RAID. At least I think that's what he meant!
