I have heard this myself - a sort-of "Whoosh" noise as a meteor passes over. A bit like the noise a firework rocket makes as it ascends, but the sound doesn't seem to travel across the sky with the meteor, and there's no doppler effect - it's just "there", for about half a second. It doesn't always happen, but it certainly *does* happen!
