Some reasons: - B sockets are a bit high, so some designs use A sockets for the device, even though this is against USB specs. (IMHO it would be better to use the newer small B sockets) - A fellow teacher deliberately designed his PCB for A sockets, so the chance of students taking the PCBs home would be (a bit) reduced.
