I don't think SMD is a good idea for *any* type of connector - you are relying on the track-glue to withstand the forces applied to the connector. In fact I don't think any components that project more than a few mm above the board should be surface-mounted - I have three of Olin's Quick-Proto boards, and on two of them capacitors were detached in shipping - they are about 10mm diameter and 10mm high, and the force of moving about in the post detached one from one contact, and another completely! I did mean to tell him about it and suggest TH for these larger parts, but I never got round to it...
