The SX is oriented toward control applications and bit-twiddling for HW interfacing, while you said you wanted a heavy duty compute engine. An SX has limited Flash and RAM, and may not be a good choice for a compute engine, compared to (for instance) 16 bit DSPICs running at a lower clock rate but capable of doing 16bit math, or an ARM doing "only" 60 mips, but with 32bit operands. In any case, the SX chips are pretty narrowly sourced, even compared to most single-source micros. As far as I know, parallax is about the only place to get SX chips and tools...
