A lot of the designs have had little hardware other than a supervisor chip, local regulator and a few other signal conditioning and buffering circuits as required. Pretty close to a "one chip design" except for interface components. That's awfully efficient to manufacture. Evidently I'm not the only one whose designs are a good fit for these packages...
