Did you miss the episode of Scrapheap Challenge (I believe it's shown there) where they had to build jet powered drag racers? One team used a turbocharger and homebuilt combustion chamber, but the other built a plusejet using just tubing, and it was very effective (I think it won the drag races 2:1). Scarey, though, sitting with your head only inches in front of a set of glowing red pipework. OK there was a heat shield, but I wouldn't have done it! The loud bang when it was started, using an electric fan to get the initial compression, was frightening enough... I felt it was a bit of a cheat, since the three contestants had no real knowledge of the subject, and their Expert had a design all ready to be built, measurements and all. Still impressive, though.
