My memories of using a stimulus file is that it was quite easy to set up. It is an ordinary text file that specifies the time between signal changes on a pin. ISTR using GWBASIC to set up a file to simulate a UART input waveform to do exactly what you are doing, and I did it all from the MPLAB documentation.
